Embrace A New Reality – Find A New Life

Are you prepared to become 80 years old, or 90, or more? Are you prepared to learn square dancing?

When  we get older and retire how well we adjust to our new life depends on many things, but most importantly on how prepared and ready we are to:

  • learn new skills
  • meet new people
  • go to unknown places
  • let go of the life we know
  • get out of our comfort zone
  • move to a new house or town
  • take risks

Being older and getting older might last a long time. If you are in your sixties or seventies you might have 25 years in front of you. Could you really look out of the same window, at the same world for that long?

Years ago I read an article in which the author advised people to learn a new trade before retiring, giving them a chance at a new life, a new career. But how many of us being 60 or 70 years old have done that? Not many. But maybe we can redeem ourselves by getting out of our comfort zone and start thinking out of the box?

What would be wrong if you moved to another country for a few months of the year. Or followed your desire to paint? Or took a cruise around the world? Or sold your house and moved into a nice new condo?

The kids – the grandkids? Don’t worry about them, they have their own life and just because you spend a few months of the year in Italy you won’t lose them. On the contrary they will be happy to visit you in Italy!

You can initiate a lot of these changes, but also watch out for what the Universe might send your way – let’s say a friend wants to start a business and ask you to be a partner. The answer is not ‘at my age I don’t think I want to take the risk.‘ Instead grab this opportunity. It might sound a little crazy or risky but it will push you out of your numbing comfort zone; giving you a reason to get up in the morning, bringing you back to life, a life which will fill the years ahead.

Of course you are! Because  – not at any time – are you too old to change and think out of the box!

Beauty Over Sixty: Exploring Shapewear

Women have gone through great lengths and extreme discomfort to enhance their figures. But we’ve come a long way from suffocating corsets and cumbersome girdles. Today’s shapewear is more comfortable than ever and can take years off your appearance.

Kinds of shapewear to explore

Support push-up bras

Nothing makes you look more matronly than a drooping chest. Today’s bra’s are extraordinary and can give just enough lift and support without making you look too busty. They also can help correct upper-back posture and stooping shoulders.

Slimming camis

These camisole tops smooth back fat and tighten the waistline. They also prevent the dreaded “muffin tops” and will prevent you from slouching. These are great for active women because they’re less confining than traditional girdles and corsets.

For the derrière

Bum-shapers abound. Some lift, separate, or even add a little extra padding. Most also help flatten the tummy with lower abdomen panels.

Legs and more

Panty-hose can help cover and support your legs, buttocks, and lower belly. Just follow these guidelines about wearing pantyhose before choosing which kind to buy.

Corsets and waist trainers

Some people believe that wearing a corset or trainer will shrink the waist and melt the flab. Whether or not this is true, a corset or waist-trainer will give the appearance of a slim waistline. This type of shapewear is excellent for lower-back posture, especially for women who sit all day. Who knows? You might lose weight if you wear it during mealtimes because you won’t be able to overeat!

Full-body contour

Full body-shapers come in the form of a bodysuit. They might be legless, with short legs, or with a skirt. Full-body shapers combine all the aforementioned shapers in one for a smooth silhouette from head to toe.

Don’t be afraid to try some of these options out!

Have you tried shapewear? How did it make you feel?

Another Birthday? – Treat Yourself!

Birthdays come and go but we are still here – yes, it’s my birthday today and no, I don’t really need another one – but I can’t stop them from happening – so the only thing to do is to look on the bright side of things and celebrate yet another year that has passed and look forward to the year ahead.

For as long as I can remember I have bought myself a new dress for my birthday. After all it is a special occasion and I wanted to mark the moment. I know people who take the day off work, but I rather went to work wearing my new dress that day. But this year I did something different –  I bought a pair shoes – not any shoes – Red Shoes – and the effect is amazing. They make me feel very feminine, very sexy and daring – and that is the attitude I need for another year to come.

Maybe red shoes are not your thing, but I am sharing this with you to remind you to treat yourself with whatever makes you feel good and special. Another birthday needs to be celebrated with a gift you give yourself!

Happy Birthday to everybody who is also born on May 6!

Lipsticks – Our Best Friends!

beautiful lips painted red lipstick

“I just want to put on some lipstick.”  is something every woman says a thousand times during her life. And while freeing the creamy stick from its tube,  looking in the mirror, and opening her lips slightly she carefully applies the magic that makes her look better and above all makes her feel whole again, because without it she feels incomplete.

I remember my mother-in-law, even at 91 years old, always had a lipstick close by. When she had diner at home or in restaurant a lipstick was right beside her plate. And no sooner had she finished her meal she picked it up and gently applied it to her lips. No, she needed no mirror, and no, she never missed, all was perfectly in place.

From all the items in our make-up kid the lipstick  is the most effective:

  • it makes the face look alive
  • it  makes the face look pretty
  • it adds sex appeal to the face
  • it protects the lips against dryness
  • it brightens up your smile
  • and most of all it makes us feel whole

Close-up of Nefertiti’s Lips

Today’s women are not the first to enhance their appeal with lipstick. In 1923 the first lipstick in a tube was sold. But as far back as in Ancient Mesopotamia (5000 BC) women decorated their lips with crushed gem stones, and in Egypt Queen Nefertiti (1370 BC)  was always depicted with red lips.

image-23

And ever since women have enhanced their beauty by coloring their lips. And our choices have grown ever since. It is an overwhelming task to find the perfect shade – (the reason we end up with dozens of lipsticks in our drawer). My personal chagrin is that every time I find the perfect color it is soon discontinued. I was told by a cosmetic company executive that women get very excited by new shades and it guarantees a sale.

But with all the options we have, beware of the following missteps when getting a little older:

  • too bright colors – can easily look garish
  • too dark colors – don’t give any life to the face
  • lip-gloss – tends to run into the little lines around the mouth

A statistic showing that when times are bad sales of lipstick go up certainly confirms that a lipstick is the most important item in our paint box.

CHAMPAGNE – Makes You Healthy and Happy

Now that the New Year is here let’s start it the right way, and do the right things to make us happy, prettier, and healthy!

All the Ways Champagne Is Good for You

As if you needed another excuse to drink it

We’re big fans of champagne (here’s proof, in case you needed it). But until now, we weren’t aware that the bubbly we’re drinking on the reg actually has a quite a few scientifically-proven health benefits. Take a look:

It’s low-calorie.

While a glass of red or white wine contains between 135 and 200 calories, a glass of brut (dry) champagne clocks in at only 95. And the low-sugar version, called “low dosage,” has a mere 65 calories per glass.

It prevents dementia and memory loss.

A study at the University of Reading determined that drinking one to three glasses of champagne each week can boost brain health. The study was done on rats, half of whom were served champagne every day for six weeks (nice life for a rat, right?). The rats were tasked with completing a maze, and while the sober rats had an average success rate of 50 percent, the bubbly drinkers had a 70 percent success rate.

It’s good for your skin.

“Champagne detoxifies the skin with antioxidants, and its lightening tartaric acid helps even out the skin tone,” says dermatologist Marina Peredo. “For those with oily skin, its antibacterial properties [help with] breakouts.”

It’s a heart-healthy beverage.

In fact, it’s just as good for your heart as red wine. Another University of Reading study concluded that “two glasses of champagne a day may be good for your heart and circulation and could reduce the risks of suffering from cardiovascular disease and stroke.” Maybe they should rename the place Champagne University?

It may actually help you drink less in the long run.

Champagne and other effervescent drinks have been shown to make people drink slower and feel full more quickly. There’s even a diet plan based around it. Score!

Cheers!

39 Forever!

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if getting older stopped at age 39? For some it does and they stay happily 39!

Image result for 39 forever birthday

A review I received from a reader of my book confirms this, and I would like to share it with you and thank Jane for writing the review, quote:

Getting Over Growing Older

Author, Ms. Brigitte Nioche

A review

I had the recent pleasure of collaborating with Ms. Brigitte Nioche at an event, along with the after perk of reading my own signed copy of Getting Over Growing Older.

Honestly, I entered the manuscript with a neutral attitude. Like others, I do not necessarily savor the prospect of aging, and have pretty much promoted the “39 forever thing “ for the past five years.

(People think I’m joking, but I’m really not.)

But that’s okay, because in Getting Over Growing Older, Ms. Nioche stays positive, focused, sophisticated, and light through her entertaining and, at times, somewhat poignant account of the inevitable march of time. I can imagine Ms. Nioche setting up a dynamic Manhattan lifestyle, balancing the needs of her family with her own professional development, a comforting model at any age.

Plus , Ms. Nioche offers certain pieces of sage, everlasting beauty advice with the power and authority of a former model and fashion consultant -to look your best, whatever is your style and to thine own self be true. In the end, it’s all about balance, as inferred in Getting Over Growing Older. I appreciate Ms. Nioche taking the time to grapple with this increasingly important topic.

4.5 stars

Men Too Can Get Over Growing Older

The 80-Year-Old Runway Model Reshaping China’s Views on Aging

BEIJING — Before cranking up the techno at his 80th birthday party, the man known as China’s hottest grandpa paused from his D.J. duties to poke fun at the staid traditional celebrations for the elderly in a country that venerates old age.

“I should wear a long robe, with the word ‘longevity’ embroidered on the front,” the birthday boy, Wang Deshun, said at his party in September. Far from looking old and frail, the silver-haired actor, model and artist wore a crisp white shirt and black jeans, his back straight and his eyes glittering with humor.

“Two young maidens should help me into an old-style wooden chair,” he continued, pretending to dodder. “On a table in front of me there should be peaches,” a symbol of longevity, “and my students should kowtow, wishing me a good birthday.”

“So, what am I doing today? My students from 30 years ago are putting on a fashion show, and I’m the D.J.,” he said, signaling the start of the show with a thudding techno mix.

Determined to avoid mental and physical stagnation, Mr. Wang has constantly explored new skills and ideas while devoting ample time to daily exercise. Last year, at 79, he walked the runway for the first time, his physique at his age causing a national sensation. He takes obvious joy in subverting
