Beauty Over 60: Getting Rid of the Old Girl

I have always worn my hair shoulder length and  liked the feeling of my hair touching my neck. But that good feeling vanished when I looked in the mirror – who is that old girl looking out at me? Reluctantly I admitted it was me, and decided it was time to cut my hair  short.

When I came to the hairdresser he asked, “What do we do today?”  “We get rid of that old girl” I answered. He laughed, “Don’t say that.” He was polite of course.

When looking  around it is amazing how many older, and even very old women wear their hair long; some very long – but it never makes them look younger; on the contrary! I do understand that cutting off those long cherished locks feels like losing ones youth.

I am convinced shorter hairstyles make a woman look younger. We can’t hide the extra years with flowing locks, they belong to the young and restless.

Walking out of the hair salon I felt naked, and looked in every window or mirror I passed to reassure myself that I had done the right thing. But hearing others say  ‘Oh, I love your hair you look so much younger’ reassured me that I will never miss that old girl.

Remember that the face is the first thing you see when looking at a person and to enhance it there is nothing better than a nice hairstyle that makes you look younger!

Part Two – Your Age Is Nobody’s Business

If Age Is Only a Number – Why Does Everybody Want to Know Mine?

Getting older is inevitable, but how soon you allow it to make decisions for you is your choice. I know that I am not ready for it, and I live my life without thinking about how old I am. Except when my birthday is coming up-that’s always a reality check! Or when a friend says, “Isn’t it your birthday next week?”

“I don’t have birthdays anymore,” I say, “I stopped those years ago.”

I often get a reaction like, “What a good idea!” Over the years, I have heard other people reply, “I am always thirty-nine” or “I have started to count backward.”

As much as I would like to ignore my date of birth, the world will not. It is written on top of my driver’s license….and it makes me slightly nervous when someone asks, “May I see some identification?” I always hope that he or she does not pay attention to my age, and luckily they usually don’t

When I pick up my blood pressure medication, the pharmacist asks, “What is your date of birth?” I wonder if she couldn’t see it in my file or what knowing my age adds to my co-payment.

I answer in a low voice.

“Can you speak up, please?” she asks again

I repeat it once more an now everybody in the line behind me knows how old I am. Most likely, nobody cares-but I do. You might call me vain, and maybe I am, but hearing myself say my age again and again reminds me of how old I am. It confirms it. This is something I can’t allow, or it will settle in my brain and creep into my bones, killing the spring in my step . Maybe it is a small spring, not like someone who is twenty-five or even forty, but I still walk erect, and don’t drag my feet.

Yes, age is only a number. But, oh, how it influences us if we are not careful. My friend Angela, who is very vibrant, active, and looks years younger than her age, recently had a birthday. When I asked her how she wanted to celebrate, she said, “Oh my god, this is a big one. I really don’t feel like celebrating. Can you imagine? I will be X years old.” (No, I won’t tell on her?

“It happens to all of us.” I replied at the time, but she didn’t hear me.

I noticed that after her birthday, Angela started every sentence with, “Well now, at my age,” or “I don’t know how long I can still do this,” or “You never know, when one gets sick, seeing how old I am now……” She never had those thoughts before, but her last birthday gave her a terrible present —it robbed her of feeling not old.

“Please don’t speak about your age all the time; it is starting to depress me,” I said to her one day.

“But it is true, I am X years old now an who knows what will happen, or if I will see my grandchildren graduate.”

Getting a little impatient with her and not knowing what to say anymore, I quoted my grandmother, who all through my life was a beacon of wisdom for me: “You know if you don’t want to become old, you have to die young!”

But Angela was so caught up in her new image of being old, she did not understand what I was trying to tell her, and continued to list all the things she would have trouble doing from now on.

A BOOK COVER – THE FIRST IMPRESSION

The cover of a book is your first contact with an author and his story.

If you have been to my website and read my blogs you will have seen the cover of my book Getting Over Growing Older with the header displaying a photo of me.

Since the reaction of the  buyers always was “Oh, that’s a nice picture of you” and since that was not the reaction I had expected or the message I wanted to convey, I decided to change the cover – and instead of smiling at you, I hope the new cover will tell you more clearly what the book is about, namely sharing my personal experience of growing older, and assuring women in their 40s or 50s plus that growing older is not only about going down hill. But it gives us a chance to enjoy life in many new and interesting ways.

AARP MAGAZINE

Do you get the AARP Magazine?

It has been put in my mailbox for some years, but I never read it until recently. And now turning the pages I don’t miss anything. And if you receive the magazine I would like draw your attention to an article in the June/July issue entitled Leading Ladies.

The Leading Ladies are Sharon Stone, Alfre Woodward, and Jane Fonda – as my grandmother used to say “age happens to everybody.” But without giving the story away here are some of the points they made – and I quote:

  • Sharon Stone  58- I don’t think we have to accept the assignment of aging, that all of a sudden you’re supposed to be dowdy………..
  • Alfre Woodaard 63- Age is what you decide you want it to be. I am still in motion.
  • Jane Fonda 78 – If you would have told me when I was 20 or 30 that I’d be happier at 70, I would have said to you ‘You are out of your mind.’

The encouragement of these ladies is uplifting and can inspire any woman to make the best of life’s third act.

THAT’S THE SPIRIT

Sitting in the bus yesterday I sat opposite a lady who was reading the paper. When the bus stopped at Columbus Circle, she looked up and fumbling to put her newspaper away, as well as trying to hold on, she said,

“Oh my, this is my stop. I have to get out.” Having trouble to steady herself a young man got up and took her arm. With a big smile she looked at him and told him,

“Young man I don’t need help, because you see I am not old, I just look old.” and with that she stepped slowly out of the bus.

SENIOR MOMENT? NO INFORMATION OVERLOAD!

scan0001-2If forgetting something is a senior moment than a lot of young people have senior moments —-  because they too forget things!

But their busy lives gives them a pass, whereas when an older person doesn’t remember it is seen as a result of being older. I think the truth, for young and old, lies somewhere in the middle. The constant bombardment of the news media, new inventions from Silicone Valley, advertisements, as well as the attachment to our new life lines like the iPhone, Smart Phone, Kindle, Podcast, Facebook, and many more I am not even aware of, are like an explosions around us. And often this new information is valid today and gone tomorrow.

A study done by Dr. Michael Remscar of the University of Tubingen in Germany reassures us, quote:

People do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more in information in their brains. Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full, so too, do humans take longer to access information when their brains are full.

Our brains are not just full they are overloaded and attacked on a daily basis. And not being able to take it all in, not being able to process it all, makes older people feel like their brains are not function as before.

Before was different. The world has changed and as hard as we try to take it all in, there will be moments for everybody – young and old – that will seem like a senior moment but are just an overload in your mental computer.

TRIPPING OR FALLING?

Good Morning Everybody!

A few days ago I ran to catch the bus, and you guessed right I lost my footing and tripped.

People helping me up asked,” What happened.”

“I fell”  I answered “trying to catch the bus.”  At that moment my friend who was with me nudged me and whispered,

“Don’t say you fell – say you tripped. If you say you fell everybody will think ‘oh, now she starts to fall.”

Best advice I had in a long time. It’s like I said in my book, don’t tell your age because people will treat you differently once they know how old you are. So let me repeat – when you tripped you didn’t fall – you tripped!

….and even when you don’t catch the bus and have a blue eye like I do

LOVE HANDLES – DO YOU WANT TO GET RID OF THEM?

Good Morning Everyone.

What a silly question you will say. Of course I do – but how? I know from experience that with exercise it is very difficult to lose stubborn fat at a specific place. Exercise firms the body but that little pouch or extra fat somewhere does not seem to be impressed by exercise.

So while visiting my dermatologist to have a mold taken care of I found a brochure in the waiting room that talked about Body Contouring. Never having heard of it (maybe I am a little behind) I read on.

No, it is not liposuction. The brochure explained that it is done with lasers, and best of all the 25 minute procedure avoids surgery. If you are interested in learning more go to http://www.sculpsure.com.

I believe in solutions and having choices. This might be one for you to say goodbye to any little extra padding you might have here or there!
