A BOOK COVER – THE FIRST IMPRESSION

The cover of a book is your first contact with an author and his story.

If you have been to my website and read my blogs you will have seen the cover of my book Getting Over Growing Older with the header displaying a photo of me.

Since the reaction of the  buyers always was “Oh, that’s a nice picture of you” and since that was not the reaction I had expected or the message I wanted to convey, I decided to change the cover – and instead of smiling at you, I hope the new cover will tell you more clearly what the book is about, namely sharing my personal experience of growing older, and assuring women in their 40s or 50s plus that growing older is not only about going down hill. But it gives us a chance to enjoy life in many new and interesting ways.

Now that you have seen the new cover I would mean a lot to me if you would tell me how you like it. Please leave a comment or email me at bbnnic@gmail.com

Thank you so much

AARP MAGAZINE

Do you get the AARP Magazine?

It has been put in my mailbox for some years, but I never read it until recently. And now turning the pages I don’t miss anything. And if you receive the magazine I would like draw your attention to an article in the June/July issue entitled Leading Ladies.

The Leading Ladies are Sharon Stone, Alfre Woodward, and Jane Fonda – as my grandmother used to say “age happens to everybody.” But without giving the story away here are some of the points they made – and I quote:

  • Sharon Stone  58- I don’t think we have to accept the assignment of aging, that all of a sudden you’re supposed to be dowdy………..
  • Alfre Woodaard 63- Age is what you decide you want it to be. I am still in motion.
  • Jane Fonda 78 – If you would have told me when I was 20 or 30 that I’d be happier at 70, I would have said to you ‘You are out of your mind.’

The encouragement of these ladies is uplifting and can inspire any woman to make the best of life’s third act.

THAT’S THE SPIRIT

Sitting in the bus yesterday I sat opposite a lady who was reading the paper. When the bus stopped at Columbus Circle, she looked up and fumbling to put her newspaper away, as well as trying to hold on, she said,

“Oh my, this is my stop. I have to get out.” Having trouble to steady herself a young man got up and took her arm. With a big smile she looked at him and told him,

“Young man I don’t need help, because you see I am not old, I just look old.” and with that she stepped slowly out of the bus.

SENIOR MOMENT? NO INFORMATION OVERLOAD!

scan0001-2If forgetting something is a senior moment than a lot of young people have senior moments —-  because they too forget things!

But their busy lives gives them a pass, whereas when an older person doesn’t remember it is seen as a result of being older. I think the truth, for young and old, lies somewhere in the middle. The constant bombardment of the news media, new inventions from Silicone Valley, advertisements, as well as the attachment to our new life lines like the iPhone, Smart Phone, Kindle, Podcast, Facebook, and many more I am not even aware of, are like an explosions around us. And often this new information is valid today and gone tomorrow.

A study done by Dr. Michael Remscar of the University of Tubingen in Germany reassures us, quote:

People do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more in information in their brains. Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full, so too, do humans take longer to access information when their brains are full.

Our brains are not just full they are overloaded and attacked on a daily basis. And not being able to take it all in, not being able to process it all, makes older people feel like their brains are not function as before.

Before was different. The world has changed and as hard as we try to take it all in, there will be moments for everybody – young and old – that will seem like a senior moment but are just an overload in your mental computer.

TRIPPING OR FALLING?

Good Morning Everybody!

A few days ago I ran to catch the bus, and you guessed right I lost my footing and tripped.

People helping me up asked,” What happened.”

“I fell”  I answered “trying to catch the bus.”  At that moment my friend who was with me nudged me and whispered,

“Don’t say you fell – say you tripped. If you say you fell everybody will think ‘oh, now she starts to fall.”

Best advice I had in a long time. It’s like I said in my book, don’t tell your age because people will treat you differently once they know how old you are. So let me repeat – when you tripped you didn’t fall – you tripped!

….and even when you don’t catch the bus and have a blue eye like I do

LOVE HANDLES – DO YOU WANT TO GET RID OF THEM?

Good Morning Everyone.

What a silly question you will say. Of course I do – but how? I know from experience that with exercise it is very difficult to lose stubborn fat at a specific place. Exercise firms the body but that little pouch or extra fat somewhere does not seem to be impressed by exercise.

So while visiting my dermatologist to have a mold taken care of I found a brochure in the waiting room that talked about Body Contouring. Never having heard of it (maybe I am a little behind) I read on.

No, it is not liposuction. The brochure explained that it is done with lasers, and best of all the 25 minute procedure avoids surgery. If you are interested in learning more go to http://www.sculpsure.com.

I believe in solutions and having choices. This might be one for you to say goodbye to any little extra padding you might have here or there!

DANCING FEET

Good Morning Everyone

If you love to dance, love Rock and Roll Music, and live in New York this is for YOU.

While I am sitting here massaging my feet, I want to share my new discovery. Living in New York as long as I do I can’t believe I have just found out about SOCK HOP SUNDAYS!

When we arrived around 9 pm, I went with my friend Pat, the place was crowded and jumping. Jumping with men and women dancing. Another surprise was – which is  a rarity in New York City – there were more men than women. Age didn’t matter either – from young to old, to older, to real old everybody was happy to be there. Partners were changed often and it felt like the joy of dancing was the reason for being here.

Not wanting to keep you in suspense any longer here are the details – SOCK HOP SUNDAYS takes place at the Iguana Café on 240 West 54th Street (yes, in the heart of Manhattan) for all other information go to http://www.sockhopsundays.com

No, I am not on their payroll to advertise, but having had such a fun and unusual experience I can’t help but share. And should you be worried that it is a pick up place, like my friend Pat had feared, believe me it is not. – It’s really about the joy of dancing – and we danced all the way home.

YOUR THOUGHTS – If you know of any other places, here in New York or elsewhere in the country, please share here on my Blog. Thank You so much!

ARE YOU LONELY?

Good Morning Everyone

Hopefully the sun shines as brightly where you are as it does in New York today.

I went to the movies last night and want to share the experience with everybody who feels lonely sometimes or can’t find a purpose in  life.

The Meddler with Susan Saradon approaches – and solves  –  challenges we face when we lose a loved one, are retired, or the kids have moved on. It is humorous, yet serious in solving the challenges faced with. But above all it is inspiring! It gives hope!

And walking home – no I don’t want to give away the ending – I wished that every lonely woman will find her chicken coop.
